The majority of people think that poker is based on luck because you cannot determine which cards you will be dealt. While this is true, it’s there are also a couple of other factors involved: odds and player abilities. That’s why casino poker is probably the most popular casino game to play. Unlike some games that pretty much do rely solely on random chance, such as roulette, with poker there’s the human element which allows players to develop skills to help them win more often.
For example, new players often expose certain signals such as showing emotion on their face if they have a good or bad hand. Experienced poker players not only recognise these signals, but they look for them in each player. The term "poker face" comes from hiding your emotions so as to not give your opponents any edge during a game.
Also, you need to understand that there are odds involved. Since there are 52 cards in a deck, you need to determine what your chances are of getting a high card, for example an Ace. With 4 aces in the deck, technically the odds are 52:4, or more appropriately 13:1. If you’re trying to figure out the chances of getting a suit, such as a Hearts card, then it’s more like 52:13 or 4:1, since there are 13 suit cards each.
Some people even count cards to try and remember which cards have already been dealt so they’ll have an even better edge guessing at which cards they may be dealt next. So, when it comes to poker, understanding odds will help give you the upper hand over someone who doesn’t pay attention to these nuances in the first place.
